Tinker, Code, Invent, Learn – Introducing our new Makerspace

As part of our Open Night 2015 celebrations, we will be unveiling our plans & resources for the new Iona Primary Makerspace, which will be based in the library from Term 4.

As the name suggests, a makerspace is a place where our students can ‘make’ things – with code, cardboard, craft materials, robots, and much more! It will host design challenges and hands-on creative projects, helping to foster and develop our students’ interests in science, technology, engineering, mathematics, and the arts.

On Thursday, September 10th, we will be hosting a pop-up maker event in the Blue Room (between the Year 5 and Year 6 classrooms) from 4-6PM.

Parents, students, and community members are invited to come in to tinker, code, invent, and learn. Explore coding with Beebots and iPads, tinker with LittleBits, build something with K’Nex, and play the MakeyMakey piano with fruit and vegetables! In addition, our Year 6 Digital Captains are looking forward to hosting a very special event, which is best described as “Robot Fashion Week”!

We would like to thank the Iona P&F for their generous support for this project. With their help, we were able to purchase our new greenscreen, Beebots, several MakeyMakey invention kits, and one of the first Dash robots in Western Australia.

If you’d like a sneak preview of what will be on show on Open Night, please explore the photos and videos below!

Classroom Blogging – Parent Guide (#ionapsict)

Over the past week, Iona PS classroom blogs have come online, offering parents, community members, and the wider world an insight into the amazing teaching and learning activities at our school.

It has been wonderful to read our classes’ first posts, and to see our first comments from parents, teachers, and students from the Iona community, and from around the world.

Finding Your Child’s Class Blog

To access your child’s classroom blog, please use the links on the “Class Blogs” menu above.

Kindergarten and PrePrimary blogs are private, and parents should have received the password via their child’s classroom teacher. Years 1-6 blogs are shared publicly, enabling our students to reach an authentic global audience.

Keeping in Touch

In order to keep in touch with posts on the Admin blog (this one), and your child’s class blog, we would strongly encourage parents to subscribe by email, using the subscription widget on the blog sidebar. It takes about 2 minutes to set up, and you will receive an automatic email notification when a new post is published.

Comments

Comments from parents, family, and around the world help bring our classroom blogs to life, and help teach our students that they are publishing for an authentic real-world audience.

When commenting on blog posts, we would appreciate it if parents and relatives leave comments under their first name, especially if they refer to a child mentioned in the post. For example, you might comment as Jenny (Laura’s Mum), rather than Jenny Smith (Laura’s Mum). This will help us protect the privacy of students mentioned / featured on classroom blog posts.

Need more information?

Each class blog has a copy of the Iona PS Blogging Guidelines, and a Parent Information page on their main menu. If you have any further questions, please contact Ms Walsh, the Principal.

Blogging Update – #ionapsict News

Exploring Online Safety

Over the past few weeks, classes from Pre-Primary to Year 3 have been learning about online safety, as part of the essential preparation for safely and responsibly sharing their work on their new classroom blogs. Our Year 1 students have created narrated eBooks using Book Creator about “Staying Safe Online”, and our Year 2 and 3 classes are working in small groups to create Adobe Voice digital stories, which will be published in a few weeks time.

Preparing for the Launch of Classroom Blogs

In the past week, many classes have chosen the theme and title for their blogs, and we look forward to opening them up for their parents, and the wider world, to view and comment in coming weeks. Currently, the Kindergarten to Year 3 class blogs will be launched within the next two weeks, with upper primary blogs likely to be launched later this Term. Parents will be notified when their child’s blog goes live.
